Title: Fohat

Here are a few quotes that can help us to understand and define the word Fohat:

~~~
“Fohat is ... the dynamic energy of Cosmic Ideation.... [It is] ... the animating principle electrifying every atom into life.” (H.P. Blavatsky, The Secret Doctrine, vol. I page 16)
“Fohat ... is the personified electric vital power, the transcendental binding Unity of all Cosmic Energies, on the unseen as on the manifested planes, the action of which resembles — on an immense scale — that of a living Force.... On the earthly plane [Fohat's] influence is felt in the magnetic and active force generated by the strong desire of the magnetizer. On the Cosmic, it is present in the constructive power that carries out, in the formation of things — from the planetary system down to the glow-worm and simple daisy....” (H.P. Blavatsky, The Secret Doctrine, vol. I page 111)
“Some faint idea of the nature of Fohat may be gathered from the appellation ‘Cosmic Electricity’ sometimes applied to it; but to the commonly known properties of electricity must, in this case, be added others, including intelligence.” (H.P. Blavatsky, The Secret Doctrine, vol. I page 85)
“When the ‘Divine Son’ breaks forth, then Fohat becomes the propelling force, the active Power which causes the ONE to become TWO and THREE — on the Cosmic plane of manifestation. The triple One differentiates into the many, and then Fohat is transformed into that force which brings together the elemental atoms and makes them aggregate and combine.” (H.P. Blavatsky, The Secret Doctrine, vol. I page 109)
Fohat is the energy of Life, “which manifests in the objective universe” as Electricity. (H.P. Blavatsky, The Secret Doctrine, vol. I page 137)
Personally I would link reiki to prana, not fohat. Fohat is a universal principle, prana may well be an earthly reflection of it.
Christian,
Here is a chart I threw together some time ago:
* There is some controversy over the meaning of Jiva vs. Jivatman. Geoffrey Barborka (The Divine Plan, p. 89) says the correct word that refers to the Monad is Jivatman, not Jiva, even though HPB often uses the word Jiva to refer to The Monad.
The thread that connects our sequential incarnations is said to be made of Fohat. I have never seen a desription of the thread that connects us to our Higher Self, but I can only assume it is also make of Fohat.
KH7,
You are correct to draw a distinction between Fohat and Prana. It is fascinating to consider the idea that "The Thread of Fohat" is actually composed of a particular form of Fohat, which may be Prana.
As we all know, electricity is one form of Fohat.
I do not think there is a meaningful distinction between prana & fohat. Both terms refer to the same universal vital force. In theosophical usage the former is commonly applied to the individual principle and the latter to cosmogenesis, but I suspect you could switch terms and the meaning would not suffer.
As for the "connection" of Higher Self to our varied incarnations - it is a ray, not a substantial pranic force. If Nick were to put his series of circles on the horizontal and one radiant Atman circle above the middle of the series, with no line connecting the circles below - that might be better.
Hi all
Sometimes Daiviprakriti is considered the pre-cosmic Fohat, so to say, before the Primordial Seven appear. Then, Fohat manifests in different forms in each one of the planes. Fohat, as a principle, is Cosmic Energy, the vehicle through which Cosmic Ideation gives form to Cosmic matter. It is said to have “Seven Sons” that are the masculine aspect of the Seven Saktis.
I think we could say that in the terrestrial planes Fohat manifests as the source of electric and magnetic phenomena on the physical plane, as kundalini on the etheric, prana on the third plane, the force of attraction and love on the kamic plane (see HPB’s description of Eros and Cupid), the power of thought on the mental, the spiritual insight on the buddhic, and the One life on the Atmic.
Of course, Fohat must have “Seven Sons” in each one of the planes, as it is the case of the seven Saktis. That is why this subject is a difficult one.
