This is not the B. de Zirkoff fuller translation, but it is online and thus easily available. It is HPB's novel of her adventures in India written originally for a Russian newspaper.

Nicholas,

Are there different versions? What about this Gutenberg site?

Gutenberg has the same one, done in 1892. The only other one I know of, in English, is BdZ's, done as part of the Collected Writings of HPB.

Dear friends,

As texts on the Gutenberg Project web site are not so easy to read I republished them on my site (A. E.’ s articles from the Irish Theosophist and H. P. B.’s From the Caves and Jungles of Hindustan.) Already some time after the installation I have had a discussion with Russian friend about the quality of that translation and his opinion was that it is heavily abridged and not so good.

Now I found a confirmation of his opinion in the words of Boris de Zirkoff in magazine Theosophia where he said:

“As many students of H.P. Blavatsky’s writings know, she wrote several rather long serial stories for some of the Russian journals of her day. A portion of this text was translated into English, French and German many years ago, and is known to the English-speaking public under the titles of: “From the Caves and Jungles of Hindustan,” and “The Mysterious Tribes of the Blue Hills.” These translations are not particularly good; for some reason or other, many passages have been eliminated, and, besides, the original text contains a great deal more material under the same titles. Eventually, the complete text will be published as an integral part of the Collected Writings now in process of publication.”

So, there is a question how to deal with this translation and I came to conclusion that it would be probably the best to insert an appropriate warning into the head of the text and to direct readers to the Boris de Zirkoff’s translation within The Collected Writings.

Until The Collected Writings weren't online yet this text was certainly useful. Now it remains just as a presentation of a valuable effort to expose HPB's writings to the western public.

Warmest regards,
Anton
