Title: Theosophical Schism

Nick the Pilot - November 23, 2006 10:51 PM (GMT)
References have been made to Mr. Judge's works, and the group that he headed. It is important for the beginning Theosophical student to know that Mr. Judge's literature does not speak for all Theosophists. Also, when reference is made to The Theosophical Society that Mr. Judge headed, it does not refer to all organizations called "The Theosophical Society". Indeed, three different organizations now exist, two of them using the actual title "The Theosophical Society". Here is a run-down of the history of the three organizations.

Madame Blavatsky died in 1891. Afterwards, a power struggle developed among the leaders of the Society. On one side was Colonel Olcott and Annie Besant. On the other side was William Q. Judge. The two groups went their separate ways.

Organization #1

Colonel Olcott (the President of the original Theosophical Society) and Annie Besant went to India and established the headquarters of their organization there. The headquarters of that organization is still there, in Adyar, India, here called the Theosophical Society (Adyar). The organization has chapters in several countries. The office of the American Section is located in Wheaton, Illinois. Here are the Adyar and Wheaton web sites:

Organization #2

William Judge stayed in America. Today, the headquarters of that organization is in Pasadena, California, here called the Theosophical Society (Pasadena). Here is the Pasadena web site:

Organization #3 -- loyal to Mr Judge but not his successor

Mr. Robert Crosbie (who was a member of William Judge’s organization) was among a group of people that broke away and started their own organization, the United Lodge of Theosophists, in 1909. The headquarters of that organization is in Los Angeles, California. Here is the U.L.T. web site:

I'd like to add that I made a FAQ on these groups as they are today (roughly), with links to their websites and goals and stuff like that:

why are there three theosophical organisations?

Thank you both for the information you have provided. Although I work at Wheaton HQ, I am not all that knowledgeable about the schisms. I will invest some time in learning about it when I have it, but for the time being my study time is devoted to school and a project I'm doing at work.

I would also be interested in learning more about other splits, such as Alice Bailey's expulsion and formation of the Lucis Trust, and Rudolph Steiner's splitting from the Theosophical Society for form the Anthroposophical Society.

I would be interested in identifying any common threads that may run through all such disruptions.

There is another offshoot. After Leader Conger died in 1951, many Pt. Loma Theosophists did not follow him, but Hartley. This TS is influential in Europe mainly.
